Renewable Energy - Biomass Generated

Biomass

Biomass energy is the energy from plants and plant-derived materials. Wood is the largest biomass energy resource today (accounting for 70% of all biomass energy consumed), but other sources include: food crops (e.g., corn into ethanol) and food byproducts (biodiesel), grassy and woody plants, residues from agriculture or forestry, and the organic component of municipal and industrial wastes. Even the fumes from landfills (methane, a natural gas) can be used as a biomass energy source (source: National Renewable Energy Laboratory).

Biomass is unique among other renewable energy sources in that by consuming biomass, caron dioxide is actually emitted and in about the same quantifies as buning fossil fuels. However, the advantage of biomass energy in terms of greenhouse gas emissions is that the CO2 that is emitted is almost entirely balanced by the carbon dioxide captured in its own growth. Conversely, the burning of fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide captured by photosynthesis millions of years ago—and essentially emits "new" greenhouse gases that cause global climate change.

Biomass is also very versatile and in all applications is completely renewable. It can be converted into biofuels, power production and products. Biomass accounted for nearly half of all energy consumed from renewable resources in 2004 (source: Energy Information Administration, 2004).
