Renewable Energy - Solar Generated

Solar Energy

According to the Energy Information Administration, the modern solar industry got its start during the oil embargo in the 1973-74. Although the solar industry has grown signifcantly over the years (see chart below), it still only accounts for 1% of all renewable energy consumed in the U.S. (source: EIA, 2004).

Most renewable energy sources are either directly or indirectly generated by the sun. Solar energy can be used in either small or large scale ways ranging from residential solar panels to large-scale utility projects that use the sun's heat to boil the water that turns the turbines for electricty. Rising electricity prices have increased demand for solar products, which has spawned new technologies and business opportunities. Learn more about solar technologies and their diverse array of applications.

Thermal Versus Photovoltaic

There two primary types of solar energy: thermal which is converted into heat, and photovoltaic which is converted into electricity.

Solar thermal devices use direct heat from the sun, concentrating it in some manner to produce heat at useful temperatures. Solar thermal devices do everything from heating swimming pools to creating steam for electricity generation.
Photovoltaic devices use semiconducting materials to convert sunlight directly into electricity.
