Ten CO2 Reducing Tips - Take Action

.....................................................................................................................................................................

Start today to take action against global climate change.

It’s Your Earth – You Can Make a Difference

1. Turn lights off when not in use and replace the light bulbs that you use most with compact fluorescent lights. CFLs use only one-quarter of the electricity to provide the same light and they last 10 times as long as a normal light bulb!

2. Switch to renewable energy: Buy green power or Renewable Energy Certificates from your local utility company. Get your school, company or community to buy renewable energy, too.

3. Buy energy efficient appliances if yours are more than 15 years old. Look for the Energy Star label. Also, buy energy efficient electronics and don't leave your electronics on standby mode when you are not using them. Electronics can use between 10 and 60% of the power they use when on stand-by.

4. Reduce and recycle junk mail. Go to http://www.41pounds.org/ or http://www.greendimes.com to learn more. Save trees and water by eliminating 80-95% of your daily junk mail and at the same time save yourself from junk mail.

5. Use the washing machine or dish washer only when you have a full load.

6. Don't leave fridge doors open for longer than necessary, let food cool down fully before putting it in the fridge or freezer, defrost regularly and keep at the right temperature. Where possible don't stand cookers and fridges/freezers next to each other.

7. Drive efficiently and less often: go the speed limit, avoid idling for long periods, ensure that tires are inflated properly, carpool when possible or take public transportation.

8. Buy or rent a fuel-efficient car.

9. Purchase carbon offsets to neutralize your next air travel trip.

10. Buy local foods. They tend to taste better because they are fresher and not transported great distances.
